2 Summary This study was specifically designed to identify ambient air quality gradients of particulate matter (PM ), total suspended particles (TSP) and associated 16 Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (16 PAHs) at three different distances (50m, m and m) from the New Jersey Turnpike (NJTPK) which is one of the busiest highways in the USA. For the collection of samples of total suspended particles (TSP) and particulate matter (PM10, PM) in selected sites were monitored by the instrument Aerocet (aerosol mass monitor) digital Monitor. The air monitoring was done on working days excluding Sunday and local holidays in good climatic conditions in order to get consistent results.
Five sites were selected and sampled for total suspended particulates (TSP), as shown in Fig. 1. The urban site at the Pudu Fire Station (BBP) is located within Kuala Lumpurcity centre, a highly traffic-congestedcommercial area. A suburban site situated at the Agricultural University ofMalaysia (UPM) is 30 km south ofthe city centre. Besides the acronyms PM (particulate matter) and SPM (suspended particulate matter), air pollution literature also uses TSP for total suspended particulates.
